Capezio 125th Anniversary Award Nominees

Capezio is celebrating 125 years with a special show and celebration on Monday, April 23rd at 7:00pm in New York City.  What is sure to be a glorious show will highlight some of the history of Capezio as well as dance legends and film stars.  The show has been conceived and directed by Ann DeAngelo.  A portion of the event’s proceeds will be given to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, American Tap Dance Foundation and the National Dance Institute.

The 125th Anniversary Award benefiting the Dizzy Feet Foundation will be given to Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of So You Think You Can Dance.  The Dizzy Feet Foundation was created in 2009 by Lythgoe, Adam Shankman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Katie Holmes.  Its goal is to help underprivileged young people achieve their dream of becoming professional dancers and also to increase their access to dance education in the United States.  They are working towards creating a national accreditation program for dance schools in all major types of dance, which will change the way dance education is formed across the nation.

The 61st annual Capezio Dance Award will be given to Tommy Tune, director and choreographer for nearly fifty years.  He is quite possibly the tallest professional dancer at six feet, six and a half inches tall.  Tune has won nine Tony Awards, both as an actor and as a choreographer.  He is also the recipient of eight Drama Desk Awards, two Obie Awards, Dance Magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the 1990 American Dance Award, the 1990 Drama League Musical Theatre Award for Direction and Choreography, the Astaire Award in 1990 and 1991, the George Abbott Lifetime Achievement Award, and the University of Texas’ Distinguished Alumnus Award.  He was also given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

What is Capezio Dance Wear?
The Capezio dance wear brand is lauded as the most trusted makers of ballet footwear and dance gear in the world. Founded in 1887 by Italy-born Salvatore Capezio, the company began humbly in a store on Broadway and 39^th Street in New York City.

Capezio’s craftsmanship was recognized early on for when he was still a cobbler repairing shoes for the Met, a few decades before Capezio dance wear rose to popularity. His transition from cobbler to shoemaker happened after he made a pair of shoes for Jean De Reszke. Upcoming Events at the Peridance Capezio Center
Peridance Capezio Center is holding their bi-annual Faculty and Students showcase, presenting renowned dance faculty performing their own choreography. Performance dates for the Faculty Showcase are on February 4^th  (8:30 pm) and 5^th (2:30 pm). The Peridance Student Showcase are on February 5^th as well, at 7:30 pm. From August 20 to September 1^st, Peridance Capezio Center will collaborate with dance institution Drew Jacoby to conduct the Blueprint Summer Intensive. Blueprint is an intensive summer dance experience offering experienced to pre-professional dancers of Ballet and Contemporary aged 16-22.

The program aims to combine current contemporary trends with conservatory technique. Students learn with some of the most sought after dance artists and educators. Faculty includes Drew Jacoby, Igal Perry, Michele Wiles, Helen Pickett, Sidra Bell and Kevin Irving.
