Frequent Dancing Stimulates Intelligence and Helps Reduce Dementia

Studies have shown that there are numerous health benefits associated with dancing including increased serotonin level, reduced stress and better cardiovascular health. More recently, it has been found that dancing can make one smarter. This is because dancing helps stimulate the mind and prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. For seniors, dancing even helps increase cognitive perception. With these new findings, dance wear stores are expected to experience a huge increase in the sales of adult dancing clothes.

The study on the relationship between smartness and dancing was conducted by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. However, it was suggested that only frequent dancing appears to protect you from dementia. Here are the statistics to show as proof:

  • Completing crossword puzzles 3-4 times a week reduces risks by 47%

The key, according to the study, is to remain immersed in activities that require split-second decisions. Women Learn About Heart Disease Prevention Through Dance

Lead by head dancer Tammi Galloway, the Benefits Spirit of Women Day of Dance introduced women to an exciting way to burn calories and stay away from hart disease: through dancing. Women donned their most comfortable dancing clothes and shimmied their way toward knowledge and illness prevention.

Galloway stressed how belly dancing, a form of dance that has roots in Persia and and much of the East, can be a truly unique and fun alternative to exercising. She began the program by sending five belly dancers to demonstrate to the audience who were in their best dance attire that day.

Spirit of Women and outreach coordinator for the community, Lacey Gallagher couldn’t agree more. She too believes that dancing is good for the heart and the figure.

A yearly event that takes place in different areas all over the country, the Day of Dance program aims to educate women about the risk of cardiovascular disease.  Gallagher hopes that through an engaging and artistic activity such as dance, they are able to reach out to women who need more information about their cardiovascular health.

Aside from belly dancing, women who participated during the Day of Dance were introduced to Pilates and Zumba and enjoyed a flash mob presentation to the tune of Michael Jackson’s megahit “Thriller.”

A credited laughter yoga instructor, Martha Jones delivered a talk and presentation about the transformative force of laughter, also called “joyology,” which according to Jones does wonders for the heart.

Jones believed that getting a good laugh, whether or not intentional, once every day can be good for one’s well being. The audience in response gave a hearty laugh.

There were also other related activities headed by the Montana State University who sent nursing students to offer body mass index and blood pressure checks during Day of Dance. Many of the participants did not only rely on their dance accessories and moves but also got a health checkup. Both the checkups are known to be significant in one’s cardiovascular wellness.

For those who did not bring their dance gear, there were booths that gave out information about stress and diabetes and sleep and cholesterol.

There were booths that focused on the importance of nutrition and proper diet, where interns stressed the important of controlling portions during meals to maintain a healthy weight.

Participants in turn learned about how we consume certain food twice as much compared to people’s diet 20 years ago. Back in the way, a plate of spaghetti only contained 500 calories, compared to the 1,025-calorie serving we have today. The bucket of popcorn we take to the cinemas has 630 calories.

Women are the target participants because many still believe that heart disease affect mostly men. This is only one of the myths that Day of Dance wants to eliminate, according to Gallagher, who added that heart diseases do not choose its target across the age brackets.

Legendary Dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov Launches Photo Exhibit

What better subject in photography than a dancer’s limber body in movement or mid-flight? Whether wearing ballet dancing shoes or contemporary dance clothing, a superb dancer will captivate the lens.

This time around, it’s another dancer turning the camera on himself and his fellow dancers.

Mikhail Baryshnikov is both photographer and subject, along with other dancers in various dance accessories, in the exhibition called “Dance this Way,” opening in the Nader Art Center in Miami, Florida.

The exhibition covers a broad spectrum of dances as Baryshnikov takes photographs of dancers in different dance clothing and genre, from ballet, modern, ethnic, popular dance, and hip-hop.

In his exhibition notes, the 64 year-old Baryshnikov, himself still a very commanding presence, aspires for the show to be both descriptive and arresting. He aims to reveal what he sees and at the same time encourage the dancers to move onto the camera.

There are parts of the dancer’s body that the audience does not often notice because of special constraints and distance between spectator and performer. Baryshnikov aims to highlight these aspects of dance, bringing closer the experience to the audience through photography.

Because of his stature in the dance world, Baryshnikov may just be the perfect photographer for the subject, since he has access to all kinds of dance stages in the world. Currently the artistic director at his own Arts Center in New York City, he was born in Latvia and was became a star in the ballet circuit of the Soviet Union. Baryshnikov then moved to perform with prestigious ballet companies all over the world.

Gallery-owner Gary Nader is thrilled to have a man of Baryshnikov’s repute holding the exhibit. Baryshnikov’s mastery and connection with the subjects make him a compelling photographer in the sense that he’s a true insider. The photos are expected to reveal intimate and unique portraits showing a backstage pass into various dance performances.

The art-instrument in this exhibition—photography—is not at all a new practice for Baryshnikov.  When it comes to taking pictures, this world famous ballet dancer is far from being a novice.

Nader quickly adds that the exhibition is not a celebrity-run show but a true presentation of a photographic talent.

Baryshnikov has been involved with projects in digital photography concerning dance, performance, and movement, specifically how the medium captures these elements. Many of the photographs are a blur of figures—performers in their element. What interests Baryshnikov is how one frame can capture movements in motion instead of freezing them into still images. This sets him apart from many of photography exhibitions on dance.

Whether on books, newspapers, or the Web, pictures representing dancers and dance often show clear, easily discernable images. “Dance this Way” departs from this mode and tries to present dancers as they move.

The photographs in the exhibit aim to replicate the same effect dancers illicit from the audience during a performance. It is from this lens that the great Baryshnikov has chosen to look through.

What to Consider When Creating or Selecting Dance Costumes

Movement is everything in dance. But equally important is a dance costume that shouldn’t only go with the music’s theme but should also complement the choreography. Before you pick or create costumes for your next dance presentation at school or a public performance, there are a few pointers that you should consider.

As a dancer, you understand the visual importance of good dance attire. You may already grasp a few ideas on what to wear while making the early parts of choreography, or perhaps after hearing the song or music several times. That’s why it is important to know your music. If you’re not a dancer but is tasked to create or prepare dance costumes, then you should know that you can’t possibly make anything without getting acquainted first with the song.

Ask the choreographer to give you a copy of the dance music they’ll be using. Listen to the song or track and determine what kind of movements the dancers will be making—are they slow and graceful, or choppy and quick. You’ll have an idea when you listen and absorb the music. Loose and diaphanous skirts are usually paired with leotards for slow to moderately paced songs. Hip-hop doesn’t have command baggy clothes. The dancers must be able to move freely in their urban-inspired costume.

Once you have a particular song, you’ll be able to trace what genre it belongs to. Pop ballads, classical, blues, alternative or disco—all these musical genres have corresponding looks you should be able to reference for your dance clothes.

Studying the song lyrics, knowing what it’s about, helps a lot in picking dance clothing that fits both the dancer and the dance. If you can’t understand the lyrics, rely on the mood or tone the song tries to convey.

Do a quick bit of research so you’ll know what to consider if you need to create dance costumes for characters. Just make sure the accessories you add don’t inhibit the dancers’ movements. A cardboard sword for a Viking warrior dancer is a good detail. But unless the dancer will be holding it during the entire dance, the sword will only get in the way.
